Czech Republic Employee Card vs EU Blue Card: Which One Should You Choose?

The Czech Republic offers two main work-and-residence permits to non-EU nationals: the Employee Card (Zaměstnanecká karta) and the EU Blue Card. They look similar on paper but differ meaningfully in salary requirements, eligibility, processing time, and long-term benefits. This article is a side-by-side comparison to help you pick the right one.

Quick comparison table

Family inclusion Yes (spouse, minor children) Yes, faster processing under EU rules

Who should apply for the Employee Card?

The Employee Card is the right choice if you:

  • Have a Czech employer offering a skilled or semi-skilled role
  • Do not yet meet the higher salary bar for the EU Blue Card
  • Have vocational training or relevant work experience but no university degree
  • Are happy to settle in the Czech Republic long-term without immediate EU mobility
  • Are in a role such as IT, engineering, healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, or logistics

Who should apply for the EU Blue Card?

The Blue Card is the right choice if you:

  • Have a recognised university degree (3+ years) or 5+ years of professional experience in a relevant field
  • Have a job offer with a salary at or above 1.5× the Czech average gross salary
  • Want the flexibility to move to another EU country after 18 months
  • Plan to apply for permanent residence faster (2 years possible with B1 Czech)
  • Are in a high-skill role (IT, finance, engineering, research, medicine)

Documents required for both permits

Common documents

  • Valid passport (with at least 2 blank pages, valid 3+ months beyond stay)
  • Signed work contract or binding job offer from a Czech employer
  • Proof of qualifications (degree certificate, vocational training, etc.)
  • CV
  • Proof of accommodation in the Czech Republic
  • Clean criminal record certificate (apostilled)
  • Medical report (confirming fitness for work)
  • Proof of financial means (bank statements or employer-paid salary)

Blue Card extras

  • Higher education certificate must be recognised (nostrification) or proven equivalent
  • Salary evidence (payslips or contract breakdown) showing monthly gross meets threshold

Application process

  1. Secure a job offer. Your Czech employer must provide a signed work contract or binding offer letter that meets the salary requirement for the chosen permit.
  2. Prepare documents. Some documents (criminal record, medical) need to be apostilled and translated into Czech by a sworn translator.
  3. Submit application at a Czech embassy abroad. If you are already in the Czech Republic on a different permit, you can apply for a change of status at the Ministry of the Interior.
  4. Biometrics collection. You will be asked to provide fingerprints and a photo at the embassy or the local office.
  5. Decision and permit issuance. For Employee Card, typically 60 - 90 days. For Blue Card, 90 - 120 days.
  6. Collect your residence permit card. Issued for the validity of the work contract (up to the maximum allowed by each permit).

Switching between the two later

It is possible to switch from an Employee Card to a Blue Card (and vice versa) once you meet the new permit's requirements. This is useful if you start a higher-paying job or complete a recognised degree. The application follows the same process as a new application but is usually processed faster because most documents are already on file.

Common mistakes

  • Applying for the Blue Card when the salary does not meet the 1.5× threshold (refused without refund of fees)
  • Not having the qualification recognised before applying for the Blue Card (nostrification is the #1 cause of Blue Card delays)
  • Submitting a criminal record certificate without apostille
  • Choosing the wrong permit because the salary seems similar (Blue Card requires 1.5× the national average, not the role's average)
  • Not applying for family members in parallel - they must be applied for separately after the main applicant is approved

Frequently asked questions

Can I work part-time on these permits?

Yes, but only in a role with a different employer after notifying the Ministry of the Interior. The main job must remain with the sponsoring employer.

What if I lose my job?

You have a 60-day window to find a new qualifying job. If you do not, the permit is cancelled.

Does the Blue Card make me an EU citizen?

No. It is a national residence permit with EU mobility rights. Czech citizenship requires a separate 5-year residence and language/civic integration process.
