Germany Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) 2026: Points System, Eligibility & How to Apply
The Chancenkarte lets skilled workers come to Germany to look for a job. Here is how the points system actually scores, who qualifies, and what the application looks like.
Germany's Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) is the newest work-related residence permit in Europe. Launched in 2024 and refined through 2025 - 2026, it lets qualified non-EU professionals come to Germany for up to 12 months to look for a job or complete qualification recognition - without a job offer in hand.
It is built on a points system, similar in spirit to Canada's or Australia's, but the bar is intentionally set lower because Germany's real bottleneck is finding skilled workers, not filtering out applicants.
How the points system works
You need at least 6 points across the categories below. The categories are designed so that a recognisable qualification, some experience, and a basic language skill already get you most of the way there.
Qualification (max 4 points)
- Recognised foreign university degree: 4 points
- Recognised foreign vocational qualification (≥2 years): 4 points
- Qualification from a German school abroad: 4 points
Age (max 2 points)
- Under 40: 2 points
- 40 - 44: 1 point
- 45 and above: 0 points (you can still qualify if you have enough points from other categories)
Work experience (max 3 points)
- 5+ years in the last 7 years: 3 points
- 2+ years in the last 5 years: 2 points
- Less than 2 years: 0 points
Language skills (max 3 points)
- B2 German (Goethe / telc): 3 points
- A2 German: 1 point
- B2 English (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE): 3 points (if German is below B1)
Germany connection (max 3 points)
- Previous legal residence in Germany (≥6 months in last 5 years): 3 points
- Spouse/partner meeting Opportunity Card criteria: 1 point
- Application from Germany with valid residence status: 1 point
Shortage occupation bonus (1 point)
- Professional experience in a German shortage occupation (IT, engineering, healthcare, skilled trades, etc.): +1 point
Who is the Opportunity Card for?
The Chancenkarte is designed for three types of candidates:
- Job seekers with a recognised qualification who want to interview in person, network, and find a German employer.
- Recognition candidates who need to complete the German qualification recognition process and want to do it in Germany.
- Skilled workers from shortage occupations who want to enter the German market quickly without a pre-arranged job offer.
Who is it NOT for?
- Applicants without a recognised qualification (vocational or university)
- Applicants who already have a German job offer (use the EU Blue Card or Skilled Workers Act instead - they are faster)
- Applicants with no proof of funds (you need to show you can support yourself for 12 months)
Documents required for the application
- Valid passport
- Recognised qualification certificate (or proof that recognition is in progress)
- CV
- Language certificate (German A1 minimum for entry; A2 or B2 for additional points)
- Proof of financial means - currently around €1,027/month for 12 months, which can be shown via:
- Blocked account (Sperrkonto) at a German bank
- Formal obligation letter (Verpflichtungserklärung) from a German sponsor
- Scholarship or stipend
- Health insurance covering the stay
- Accommodation proof in Germany (rental contract, hotel, or temporary stay)
- Biometric photo
Step-by-step application
- Pre-check your points. Use the official BAMF "Make it in Germany" points calculator to confirm you score at least 6.
- Prepare documents. Get your qualification recognised (or apply for recognition in parallel - this can take months).
- Open a blocked account or get a sponsor letter. Standard blocked account is around €12,324 for 12 months at €1,027/month.
- Book an appointment at the German embassy. Processing times vary by location; book 4 - 8 weeks ahead.
- Attend the visa interview. Bring originals and copies of every document.
- Receive the visa. Typical processing 4 - 8 weeks.
- Arrive in Germany and register. Within 14 days, register your address at the local Bürgeramt and obtain a residence permit at the Ausländerbehörde.
- Use the 12 months. Apply for jobs, complete recognition, attend interviews.
What happens after the Opportunity Card?
The Chancenkarte is not a permanent permit. It is a 12-month entry permit. You must transition into one of the following during that time:
- EU Blue Card
- Skilled Workers Act residence permit (§18b AufenthG)
- Recognition partial permit (if recognition is still in progress)
- Job-seeker extension (in some cases, an additional 6 months is possible)
If you do not secure a qualifying job or complete recognition within the 12 months, you must leave Germany.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Not having a recognised qualification (the scheme is not for unskilled workers)
- Insufficient proof of funds (the most common refusal reason)
- Submitting a CV in the wrong format (German employers expect a specific structure - chronological, with photo, dates, and skills)
- Booking the embassy appointment too late - slots in high-demand cities can be 8+ weeks out
- Forgetting to apply for qualification recognition in parallel (it often takes 4 - 6 months)

Score My ProfileFrequently asked questions
Can I work part-time on the Opportunity Card?
Yes, trial work of up to 20 hours per week is allowed to support yourself, but the main purpose is job-hunting and recognition.
Can my family join me?
Family reunification is generally possible once you have a qualifying work permit (EU Blue Card, etc.). They cannot join on the Chancenkarte alone.
Is the Opportunity Card a guarantee of a job?
No. It is a 12-month residence permit to look for work. You must find a qualifying job during that time to convert it to a work permit.
